Rex the Dog Saving the Chicks

One night, a terrible wind swept across the farm. In the morning, Rex, the farm dog, went around to check on all the animals and see if the big wind had damaged their homes. His first stop was the piglets.

“Hello, piglets. That was a quite a wind last night. Is your pigsty alright?”

“Oink, oink, oink—oh yes, it is. Nice and sturdy. But we didn’t get any sleep because of all that noise from the wind.

Rex went on and came to the cows.

“Hello, cows, did the wind destroy your barn last night?”

“Moo, moo, moo—nope. It’s sturdy. But the farmer’s wife was late with breakfast, and now we’re hungry,” the cows said.

“Don’t worry,” Rex reassured them. “The farmer’s wife is already on her way. She just had to pick up all the baskets the wind blew around the yard.”

Rex walked on and came to the chicken coop.

“Hello, chickens. How’s your coop? Did it survive the stormy night?”

“Cluck, cluck, cluck. Rex, I’m so glad you came,” called the mother hen, running in from the yard. I’ve been running around since morning, searching for my chicks. The wind scared them so much they ran off somewhere. I hope nothing happened to them.

“Don’t worry, mother hen, I’ll find them,” said Rex, lowering his nose to the ground and starting to sniff.

As soon as he picked up the chicks’ scent, he followed it. The mother hen hopped after him impatiently, clucking and calling for her babies the whole time.

The tracks led Rex all the way to the stable.

“Hello, horses, have you seen the chickens around here?” asked Rex. “I’m sure they came this way.”

“Of course we have,” neighed the horse. “They’re here with us. They got lost in the wind last night and wandered over from the yard to us.”

A flock of little chicks dashed out of the stable and hurried straight to the mother hen.

“My little ones, I’m so happy I found you,” the hen clucked blissfully, hugging each chicken. “Thank you, Rex, for helping me find them.”

“Oh, it’s nothing, hen. That’s what I’m here for,” Rex said with a smile.

“Will you come with us out to the yard?” the hen asked.

“Not this time. I still have to check on the other animals around the farm. What if someone else needs my help?” said Rex, and ran off to the pasture to check on the sheep.
