Gloria the Jellyfish

When you look at the globe, you’ll see lots of big blue spots. Do you know what they are? They are seas and oceans. And there are lots of them on our planet. Lots of animals live in these seas.

Fish big and small, fat and thin, octopuses and many other creatures. But there is one animal that cannot swim, yet lives there happily and never drowns.

Bedtime story - Gloria the Jellyfish
Gloria the Jellyfish

This animal is called a jellyfish. It’s beautiful. It looks like a mushroom with long, flowing hair and moves gracefully through the water. It looks as if it’s swimming, but it’s not. It simply lets the current carry it along. When it moves on its own, it’s only to look for food. Still, life in the sea isn’t always easy for a jellyfish. It needs friends and a little help sometimes too. Let me tell you a story about one of them.

Once upon a time, deep in the sea, there lived a jellyfish named Gloria. She was silver in color and glowed in the light, as if she had tiny colored lights inside her. She was beautiful – and smart too. Gloria always stayed close to her home, drifting with the gentle current that kept her in the same place. She was friends with the fish who swam nearby, and they often came to chat with her.

But one day, a big storm came to Earth. It came out of nowhere. A strong wind picked up and blew across the wide sea. The rain poured down and the waves grew higher and higher. The storm was so strong that it reached deep below the surface. Even the currents near Gloria the jellyfish’s house began to change. Suddenly, the water lifted her up and carried her away. Gloria tried to resist, but she couldn’t – she didn’t know how to swim.

Then she had an idea. She would call her fish friends. “Help! Please help me! The current is too strong – it’s carrying me away.”

When the fish heard their friend calling, they quickly swam toward her. They saw the current pulling Gloria the jellyfish farther and farther from home. Without hesitation, they gathered all their strength and swam against the current, creating a powerful whirlpool stronger than the stormy water current. Gloria watched in fear as her friends fought the rushing water, hoping they would succeed.

It wasn’t easy. The current was fierce. But in the end, the fish were stronger and managed to guide their friend safely back home.

“Thank you, my friends – thank you so much. Without you, I wouldn’t be here anymore. Who knows where I would have drifted,” said Gloria, grateful to the fish that saved her.

And so, to this day, jellyfish Gloria still lives in the same place in the sea. She still can’t swim – but she knows she doesn’t have to be afraid. She knows that when a storm and a strong current come, she has friends who will help her stay on the right course.
