School break was over. The winter vacation had flown by fast and children had to go back to school. But they were still looking forward to afternoon fun in the snow. They were restless at their school desks; that’s how much they were looking forward to being on the hill. But they had no idea what awaited them.

In a faraway wilderness there lived a family of lions. Mommy lion, daddy lion, and two lion cubs. They were two boys. Each was completely different, even though they were born on the same day. One lion was playful and wild, always trying to learn everything. He always stuck to his mommy, watching her hunt, guard her cubs, and be brave. The other lion cub was incredibly lazy. It just slept, lay around, and waited for his mommy lioness to bring him some food.

At the edge of town, right where all the roads and sidewalks end, stands a colorful house. It has an orange roof and light blue walls with flowers painted on them. Even though no one lives in it, a lot of children still arrive there every day, brought by their parents. It’s a preschool.

It was February. Mornings were still frosty and now and then, a few snowflakes fell. A blanket of snow was still covering the hills and ice glistened on the surface of ponds and lakes. A stately willow tree stood by one of the ponds. And every day, waterman Scruff sat in that willow tree. He wore a warm green coat and a red cap, his periwinkle-green hair sticking out from under it. The waterman sat in the willow tree above the pond every day, watching over his friends the carps and catfish who lived in the pond.

He was all grown up and it was time for him to get married. But the prince didn’t really want to. He didn’t know any princesses that he liked.

At the edge of a town, in a small house, there lived a painter. He painted pictures and various posters. And all he painted were animals. In some of his pictures, a cat with boots was proudly striding along, in others there were hedgehogs with apples, and in another, he painted a mouse with cheese. All of the painter’s pictures and posters were hanging on display in his garden.
